Historical Context
The British Aerospace Hawk first took flight in 1974, designed originally by Hawker Siddeley as an advanced jet trainer to replace the aging Folland Gnat in RAF service. Sleek, agile, and forgiving enough for student pilots yet capable enough for display flying, the Hawk quickly earned a reputation as one of the finest jet trainers ever built. It entered RAF service in 1976 and has since been exported to over 18 air forces around the world.
In 1979, the RAF's Red Arrows aerobatic display team made the switch from the Gnat to the Hawk T1 — and the rest is aviation history. Since then, the Red Arrows have flown the Hawk in over 5,000 displays across 57 countries, performing some of the most technically demanding formation aerobatics in the world. At the heart of their show is the legendary "Synchro Pair," where two Hawks cross head-on at closing speeds exceeding 700 mph with just feet of separation — a maneuver that demands absolute precision from both pilot and aircraft. The Hawk's responsiveness and predictability make it uniquely suited to this kind of flying, and it remains the mount of the Red Arrows to this day — one of the longest-serving display aircraft in airshow history.
